SC2003 News
May Edition, May 22, 2003

Welcome
Greetings and welcome to the 2003 edition of the SC conference series official newsletter. If you are receiving this newsletter, it is because you attended a previous SC conference. The newsletter is intended to give you useful, up-to-date information about SC2003 through short articles and a lot of urls and email addresses. It will be distributed at least once each month up to the time of the conference. To unsubscribe from our distribution list, click on the link at the bottom of the email, or reply to this message with the word "unsubscribe" as the subject of the message. Newsletters also will be posted on the SC2003 website.

SC2003, under the theme “Igniting Innovation," will be held Nov. 15-21 in Phoenix, AZ.

Online Reservations Website for SC2003 Hotels Opens Monday, June 2
If you’re planning on attending SC2003, it’s a good idea to reserve your hotel room as soon as you can – the website for making hotel reservations goes live on Monday, June 2. Making your reservation early means you’ll have a better chance of getting the room you want – and getting the government rate, if applicable. However, several hotels in the conference block this year are offering rooms at rates close to the government rate. All rooms are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. More information about the hotels, with links to a list of rates and location map, is on the SC2003 Hotel Reservations website.

The SC2003 conference hotels in Phoenix are located at varying distances from the convention center, as at SC2000 in Dallas. While some are within easy walking distance, the other hotels will be served by frequent shuttle buses. When looking at the map of hotels, remember that the distances are deceptive and most of the hotels are within a 5-mile radius of the Phoenix Civic Plaza Convention Center. The airport is also only about 12-15 minutes from the convention center. While the conference will again provide shuttle bus service between the conference hotels and the convention center, conference attendees who book rooms at hotels outside the conference reservation block will have to make their own transportation arrangements for getting to the convention center.

Panels Applications Due June 1
SC Conference panels have a reputation for being thought-provoking, entertaining, even controversial, and this year's crop promises to be just as lively. If you have a panel topic idea, contact the technical program panels committee as soon as possible with your topic, proposed panelists, and suggested chair. All panel proposals must be received by Sunday, June 1.

Education Program Deadline Approaching Fast
The SC2003 Education Program teaches undergraduate faculty and K-12 teachers about high performance computing and communications tools and resources that can enhance classroom instruction. Participants learn about approaches to using modeling and visualization in the classroom, including numerical modeling, algebraic modeling, dynamic modeling systems, and agent modeling. Teams of teachers can apply for the program through May 30. More information and an application form is available.

Research Exhibits Update
There has been some confusion about deadlines for submitting applications for booths in the SC2003 Research Exhibits area. The Research Exhibits committee apologizes for this and extends its thanks to the 81 exhibitors who submitted applications in April. Booth selection began the week of May 12. If you have already submitted an application, you will be notified by email when it is your turn to select a booth. For those research organizations who have not yet submitted an application, there is still time. The application form is available on the research exhibits page of the SC2003 website. Those with questions can contact the committee. Thanks again for your interest – the Research Exhibits team looks forward to putting together the best research exhibits area possible.

Nominations Sought For Seymour Cray & Sidney Fernbach Awards
Nominations are being sought for the Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award and the Sidney Fernbach Memorial Award. These awards, sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society, will be presented during the awards ceremony at SC2003 in Phoenix. The deadline for submitting nominations for both the Cray and Fernbach awards is Thursday, July 31. Here is some more information about these awards:

The Seymour Cray Computer Engineering Award is given to individuals whose innovative contributions to high performance computing systems best exemplify the creative spirit demonstrated by Seymour Cray. The award consists of a crystal model, certificate, and honorarium of $10,000. The nomination form and submission information is now available on the web.

The Sidney Fernbach Memorial Award was established in 1992 in memory of Sidney Fernbach, one of the pioneers in the development and application of high performance computers for the solution of large computational problems. A certificate and $2,000 are awarded for outstanding contributions in the application of high performance computers using innovative approaches. Read the nomination form and submission information.
